Firearms Amendment Bill 2026

What the bill says it does

The purposes of this Act are— (a) to amend the Firearms Act 1996— (i) to ensure the continuation of the firearm prohibition order scheme; and (ii) to make further provision for the categorisation of firearms; and (iii) to increase penalties for offences relating to trafficking of firearms and firearm prohibition orders; and (iv) to impose a citizenship requirement and a firearms background check requirement on the holding of a licence; and (b) to make consequential amendments to the Firearms Amendment Act 2018.
